Year 6

Welcome to Year 6.  In this year we help to prepare the children for their transition to secondary school.  Children are expected to demonstrate great listening, concentration and effort as well as excellent behaviour, setting a fantastic example to the children lower in the school.  We have lots of extra responsibilities in Year 6 such as Prefects, Eco-team, Playground Leaders and House Captains and we enjoy being ambassadors for the rest of the school.

0:02 Today we're going to be covering long division. My first question is how to

0:07 complete this equation. 7,752

0:14 divided by 17.

0:19 The first step is to write out my bus stop method. So, I'm going to write out

0:24 my dividend

0:28 and then I'm going to draw my bus stop and my divisor

0:33 is 17. When I divide, my answer will be the

0:40 quotient. The next step is to create a fact box

0:46 because my 17 times table isn't embedded.

0:50 Next, I'm going to draw my fact box. I'm going to make sure I've got 10

0:57 multiples of 17. So, I'll draw this box. So, I will have 1 * 17, 2 * 17

1:08 all the way up to 10 * 17. There are some facts that we know

1:17 automatically. We know that 1 * 17 is going to be 17. The next one I would

1:23 definitely know is my 10 * 17 which is going to be 10 times bigger. So 170.

1:31 My 2 * 17 I know that's double 17. That would give me 34.

1:38 My 4 * 17 I know will be double 34 which will give me 68.

1:45 Another one I can work out is my eights because I know that double my four times

1:52 four * 17 add 4 * 17 would be 8 * 17. So that one would give me

2:00 136. There are other ways we can do it as

2:04 well though if you find something that's quite difficult. If we're finding our

2:07 three times, we can just add our one times and our two times together, which

2:12 is a little bit like column addition. So I know that's going to be 11. And then

2:18 my one and my three and my one will give me 51.

2:22 Now my five times again I could use that method. I could do my two times add my

2:27 three times. That's 85. Or five times could be half of my 10 times. But I

2:32 think I'll stick to the two times add three times. That would give me 85.

2:38 My six times again I can see that's actually double my three times. It's

2:42 double 51 would give me 102. Then we've got seven times. Again, we

2:50 could use a method such as adding my two times, add my five times. Or I could do

2:55 my six times, add another 17, which I think that's probably the easiest one

3:00 because then I know two add 17 is 19. So, we've got 119.

3:06 my nine times. Again, I could do systems like five, add the four, or we could

3:11 just add 17 onto 136, which will give me 153. Again, I could have just done some

3:20 column addition up in the side to help me with that step.

3:25 The system that we've been using to help the children remember the steps to use

3:30 long division is divide then to multiply

3:38 to subtract and to bring down. So at the top of

3:44 every question the children have been doing they've been writing those four

3:48 steps. So now we've got all the multiples and

3:51 we can start by how many groups of 17 there are in the number seven. And we

3:58 can see there aren't any. So we can put a zero there. Sometimes that just helps

4:03 just in case we put the numbers in the wrong place. We can say there's no 17,

4:08 no groups of 17 in the seven. So I'm going to go to the 77 hundreds instead.

4:14 How many groups I can see there. So, what the children have been doing with

4:17 us is we'll look at our multiples of 17, but we can't go over the number 77. So,

4:23 we're going to go one, two, three, four. There are four groups of 17. So, put the

4:29 four here. That's our divide. The next step is to multiply. So, now they're

4:35 doing four * 17, which will give us 68.

4:43 Next step will be to subtract it. So I'm going to put the subtract sign in there.

4:49 Put a little equals bar and my subtract will be the 77 take away

4:55 68 which will give us 9. Sometimes the

5:00 children might still do 8 takeway 7, but we're reminding them that either you can

5:04 count up from 68 or we could do an exchange if they're more confident um

5:09 using column um subtraction. We've done our subtracting. Now I'm

5:15 going to bring it down the next digit to be 95.

5:20 So we've done all those four steps. We're now repeating it again. We're now

5:24 going to go back to dividing. We're looking at 95 now, which is actually 95

5:29 tens. So, we're looking at 95. So, we'll look at our multiples again. We've got 1

5:34 2 3 4 5 groups of 17. So, I'll put five there. There's my divide. Now, I'm going

5:43 to go back to my 17 multiplied by five, which gives me 85. There's my multiply.

5:51 Now, I'm going to subtract it. my equals bar and 95 take 85 gives us 10

6:00 and then we're going to bring down bring down that two. We now have 102

6:08 ones. So we're going to go back to our multiples. We got 1 2 3 4 5 6 because 6

6:16 * 17 gives me 102. Let's subtract it

6:24and we can see we have remainder zero. And then when we go on to the harder

6:28 questions, there may well be remainders. But for now, we don't need to write

6:32 remainder zero. We can finish our equation.

6:39 And that leaves us with our quotient. For those children who fancy an extra

6:44 challenge, you could then try the inverse and try your 456

6:50 multiplied by 17 and practice your long multiplication skills where you should

6:55 get back to the answer 7,752. We hope you enjoy trying it out. Bye for

7:02 now

P.E. Kit

Our P.E. lessons are on Mondays and Thursdays.  Children need to come to school dressed in their P.E. kits, therefore they do not need to keep a P.E. kit in school.

As a reminder, this is

Navy shorts.

Red Worplesdon T-shirt. A plain red t-shirt is acceptable.

Trainers for outdoor games lessons.

Navy tracksuit for outdoor games lessons.

Please avoid sending your child to school wearing earrings on P.E. days.

Homework

In Year 6, children will receive age appropriate Maths, English and EGPS (English Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling) homework tasks which will be set weekly on Atom Learning. These homework tasks will be based on what your child has practised in class during the week and are designed simply to reinforce and consolidate what they have learnt.

In addition to these weekly homework tasks, the children are expected to complete a minimum of four signed reads per week in their reading diary and please also encourage your children to practise their timestables on TT Rockstars.

Reading

Reading books and diaries should be in school every day.  They will be checked each Wednesday.

The School uses a wide variety of reading schemes that directly link with the National Bookband Scheme.

We expect to see four signed reads per week.

If your child is having difficulty with choosing books then please ask them to come and speak to one of the Year 6 team.  We do not have a set day to renew or change reading books but we will give the children an opportunity to do this at several times during the week.

Maths

In order to enrich your child’s experience in school, we would like to suggest some ways you can help at home:

Snacks

Please ****  NO NUTS  ****

Children are allowed to bring in a piece of fresh fruit or vegetables to eat at break time and are encouraged to have a bottle of water in the classroom to keep hydrated.

Parents

If there are any questions or concerns, please drop in to see the Class Teacher or leave a note in your child’s reading diary.  We are here to help.
