Year 4

Welcome to Year 4.  We pride ourselves on being excellent role models to the younger children in the school by modelling impeccable behaviour during lessons and when moving around the school.  We love developing our writing skills by creating information reports, stories and poems about our topics.

Important Things to Know

 P.E. Kit

Our P.E. lessons are on  Mondays and Thursdays for Woodpeckers and Kingfishers, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays for Nightingales. Children need to come to school dressed in their P.E. kits, therefore they do not need to keep a P.E. kit in school.

As a reminder, this is

Navy shorts.

Red Worplesdon T-shirt. A plain red t-shirt is acceptable.

Trainers for outdoor games lessons.

Navy tracksuit for outdoor games lessons.

Please avoid sending your child to school wearing earrings on P.E. days.

 Homework

Children in Year 4 are expected to complete a minimum of FOUR signed reads per week, recording these in their reading diary. Their diaries are checked in school every Monday. Children should also complete 21 minutes of Times Tables Rockstars every week. We will also be checking the engagement with this on a Monday where there is an opportunity for the children to win rewards.

 Reading

Reading books and diaries should be in school every day.

They will be checked every Monday.

The School uses a wide variety of reading schemes that directly link with the National Bookband Scheme.

We expect to see four signed reads per week.

Maths

In order to enrich your child’s experience in school, we would like to suggest some ways you can help at home:

  • https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button - Use Hit the Button to support your child with rapid recall of number bonds and times table facts. It can also be used to practise doubling and halving numbers.
  • https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10 - Daily 10 is a fantastic tool to practise specific times tables in a low-stakes timed activity. You can select a specific times table or a mix of times tables. Daily 10 can also be used for number bonds practise.
  • https://ttrockstars.com/ - Times Table Rockstars is a brilliant tool for increasing your child’s fluency of the times tables. It is also helpful for increasing the speed at which they can recall times table facts. There are a variety of games available, each supporting a different element of times tables.

-            Garage – Complete your heat map with rapid recall of times tables facts. Earn coins to personalise your character.

-            Soundcheck – The set up for Soundcheck is very close to that of the Multiplication Check.

0:02 Hi there, it's Mr. T and I wanted to share with you a little bit more

0:04 information about how we teach times tables in year four. There's really

0:08 specific steps that we take to ensure that your child knows those times tables

0:12 inside out and is ready for the multiplication times table check. So to

0:17 start off with, we learn it by wrote. So it has full number sentences. So 1* 2 is

0:23 2, 2 * 2 is four, 3 * 2 is six. So we're not just learning 2 4 6 8. We're

0:28 learning as a full number sentence. That number fact is getting in our head.

0:32 We'll also learn it the other way round. So, we'll learn 1* 2 is two and two * 1

0:37 is two. So, they're really getting um to grips with that. Once they've got that,

0:41 we're going to move on to step two, which is completing the time tables out

0:46 of order. Um again, using full number sentences. So, 2 * 4 is 8 and 4 * 2 is

0:52 eight. So, they're learning it both ways round. Once they're confident with that,

0:57 we move on to the missing boxes. So, it's again applying that knowledge of

1:01 that times table in a slightly different way. So, what times 2 is 8? So, it be 4*

1:05 2 is 8. And getting them used to doing this quickly and with that fluency and

1:11 that recall. It's really building up that sticky knowledge. Then we will

1:16 finish off with learning it with the inverse. So, using the division facts to

1:20 remember what we need to put in there. We hope that helps. If you have any

1:24 questions, do let us know.
